Davis Senior Tour at Peña Adobe
Native American Peña Adobe Historical Society docent speaks with seniors aboard their bus at Peña Adobe Park
With our current season coming to a close, we had one of our last scheduled tours of the Peña Adobe on Tuesday, November 19th. Peña Adobe Historical Society members welcomed 15 visitors from the University Retirement Community of Davis for this their second visit to the park.
In 1993 the Davis Senior Housing and Care Continuum teamed up with the board of the University Retirement Community to create a Life Plan Community focused on lifelong learning, personal growth, health, and well-being. On February 21, 2000, the first residents moved in. This is the second year we have worked with the University Retirement Community with tours of the Peña Adobe and Museum.
This year, some of the seniors in attendance have mobility issues, so we took the museum to them! We directed the bus driver to park so the retirees could view the adobe from their windows, while docents boarded the bus. Society members began the presentation with the history of the Adobe and the Peña family. Native American docents spoke of their heritage and everyone had an opportunity to ask questions and examine artifacts from the museum.
After an hour and a half, it was time for them to head back to Davis full of knowledge of the Peña and Vaca family history!
